Back to Creative Writing School by Bridget Whelan

As an expert in creative writing (I have a doctorate), I wouldn't recommend this book to anyone.

First, I distrust anyone who gives advice (on writing or otherwise, but especially writing) who consistently makes the same punctuation and grammar mistakes throughout. It's unprofessional, lazy, and lacking attend tion to detail.

You can easily find more useful writing exercises for free by Googling "creative writing exercises." Do that.

Fundamentally, though, it doesn't provide much practical guidance for new writers.

More comprehensive alternatives: Creative Writing by Linda Anderson, Steering the. Raft by Ursula LeGuin, On Writing by Stephen King, How to Write a Mystery edited by Lee Childs (even if you're not writing a mystery; loads of good writing advice in general).
