The School for Good and Evil by Soman Chainani
3.0

7.50/10 (review contains spoilers)

I think I would have liked the book much more if I had read it in sixth grade. Now it didn't really fascinate me. There were quite a few things in the book that I didn't agree with, and overall, this book is too stereotypical for me to like.

There were also a few things that I didn't understand, like the part about beauty, where it constantly said in the book that Agatha is ugly and that's why she should be in the School for Evil, but then a teacher told her that it doesn't matter how she looks because beauty is more about the soul. But at the end of the book, when the two schools were at war and the good ones were losing at first, they transformed into the evil ones and became uglier, which I didn't understand because I thought the author wanted us to realize that beauty is not on the outside but on the inside, but then at the end of the book, he somehow contradicted himself.

The romance in the book made me feel confused because I didn't understand who loved whom anymore, and it all seemed like chaos to me. From what I gathered, I understood that this book was supposed to contain the enemies-to-lovers trope, which I generally really like, but here I just don't think it was executed correctly, and many things happened too abruptly.

Characters:

• Sophie: I didn't sympathize with her from the beginning. I find her very annoying, fake, and superficial, and Agatha doesn't deserve what happened to her because of Sophie.

• Agatha: I liked her from the beginning, and she seems like a very loyal person, considering the fact that she forgave Sophie a thousand times and didn't abandon her after everything that happened.

• Beatrix: She annoyed me from the beginning. She seems the same, a very fake person, who only cares about material things, and that's how I see almost all the girls from the School for Good.

• Dot: I liked her from the beginning, and she seemed like a very sweet person who didn't deserve what happened to her, and I still think she deserves much better friends who truly appreciate her.

• Hester: She seemed like an interesting person, and it frustrated me that she didn't win that competition because it's clear that she's stronger than Tedros, and in general, she seems badass.

• Anadil: Just like Hester, I liked Anadil because she seems like a very interesting character, and I would like to see more of her in action because she has potential.

• Tedros: At first, I thought he wouldn't be like the other boys from the School for Good, but by the end of the book, I ended up hating him because he seems quite naive, and I simply don't think he deserves Agatha, especially after he tried to kill her shortly after saying he's her prince and will always protect her.

• Hort: To be honest, I feel sorry for how the others treated him because I think he deserves better than that. I would find it fun to have him as a friend because he seems funny and a cool person.

• Kiko: I sympathized with her too, especially since she was the only one among the girls from the School for Good who treated Agatha decently and was nice. I'm glad she eventually got what she wanted.

• Arachne: I think she's a character with potential, and I would like to see and learn more about her.
