The Map of Knowledge: How Classical Ideas Were Lost and Found: A History in Seven Cities by Violet Moller

informative medium-paced

2.75

Beautiful cover and interesting concept. A great reminder of how easily all written knowledge of the Roman and Greek world could have been lost forever and an ode to the people and places that kept the flame alive. However, I found actually reading this less compelling. The writing seemed quite basic, more a regurgitation of facts and events more in keeping with a college essay than a popular history book. I never felt that the author managed to make any of the cities feel alive or create a compelling flow to the narrative. An OK read but not one I'd particularly recommend
