Berättelsen om herr Sommer by Patrick Süskind

I know what this is trying for, but I find the whole nostalgic story of childhood with a darker truth thing never really works for me. As such it felt like a bit of a shaggy dog story, which didn’t really go very far and whose narrator’s occasional meanderings felt less like charming asides and more like padding to justify it being a novella not a short story. Still, Sempé’s art is worth the book alone and brings a sprightly melancholy that the prose just didn’t succeed with for me
