I gave this book a 5 out of 5 stars!

Liza Lighty is my heart and soul. Her character is great with so much depth and complexity. She is essentially the “nerd” who just wants to get through her high school and go to her dream college. However, there is a road block to that dream.

I loved that there were many themes explored throughout the book. The idea of rich vs poor. The idea about white privilege and how it affects society, even in the high school environment. The idea of how Black children are treated in the educational system. I also appreciated that in the book, the representation for Sickle Cell Anemic people because it does affect the Black community, heavily. What’s also explored are the micro aggressions that Black people have to face everyday, which are subtle jabs.

I really felt for Liz because she was just trying to live her life. She wanted to honor her late mother by going to her alma mater, but she doesn’t have the funds so she tries to figure out a way to get the money. The respect and closeness she has with her grandparents, who are raising her and her brother. The responsibility she feels to take care of her little brother. There was so much piled onto her, she doesn’t have time to breath. But she does it because you do that for the people you care about. I’m glad she got her happy ending because she really deserves it.

In all, this is the type of nerd to prom queen story I didn’t know I needed. It’s amazing and everyone should read it.
