Where the Truth Lies
by Anna Bailey
My personal rating is 3-stars, but I rated up because I can see many people really liking this title. It is well written, the setting provides a fitting backdrop for the narrative, i.e., a small town with harsh winters surrounded by woods and secret spaces. The author's use of time is effective in allowing the reader the opportunity to put the pieces together on their own. While the large cast of characters (for the most part) are distinct, there is a collective depression, misery, and haughty holiness that coats them all. The ending will be satisfying for most.
There were several things that didn't work FOR ME. I say for me because as I was intrigued enough by the plot to ask for a copy, it turns out that it's not my type of story. I don't mind a slow burn if it's slow because I'm working out the motivations of the characters and learning their impulses (or lack thereof). I found that while the characters were pretty distinct, they were one-dimensional and unlikeable. Let me point out that I don't have an issue with unlikeable characters, but I do need to believe them.
That being said I do think there will be a lot of love for this title. Those who like sprawling small town secret-filled novels will enjoy all these horrible people.
