this was a beautiful story. i enjoyed the pace - it moved fast without feeling rushed. i liked the ambiguity that ran throughout the whole book too; i won’t spoil anything but LaCour’s writing allowed for lots of suspense and i wasn’t sure about where the farm stood in terms of good/bad!
elements of magical realism are subtle and symbolic. reading this take on a ghost story where the ghosts aren’t exactly scary or bad was really fun too! instead, the way they “haunt” is a metaphor for the pain one experiences in the healing process when reliving trauma.
overall i thought Watch Over Me was a wonderful portrayal of trauma and healing, with an ultimately hopeful tone.
