Neglected Merge is the first of a trilogy, so the author developed the whole story into three books. Hence, it makes sense to be slow once the author needs to introduce and explain better two different cultures, even if one is similar to ours. The diplomacy and secrets revealed during the reading are well constructed, and it lets a cliffhanger for the second book.
In my opinion, she worked pretty well on diplomacy, politics, and romance in just 360 pages. I also liked she created urban fantasy with a different concept of human society.
