At the Mountains of Madness: And Other Tales of Terror
by H.P. Lovecraft
Lovecraft seems to excel at one technique: establishing mood. The rest, I could do without. I liked the mood though, and read it quite rapidly near the end. Lovecraft quite bizarrely even managed to make penguins creepy. Weird fiction indeed.
Also, by a happy coincidence, this novella seems to be the origin of the story that eventually evolved into John Carpenter's The Thing, which is the best.
