The House of Twelve
by Sean Davies
Thank you to Voracious Readers Only and the publisher for an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Twelve strangers awaken in an unknown house with no memories except for their names. A set of rules dictate that one person has to die each night and the inhabitants are forced to choose who to kill in order to save themselves. Who will survive and who will be the last man standing?
I love the premise because I'm a sucker for mysteries/thrillers where a group of people find themselves trapped in a single location and are killed off one by one. It was what drew me into the story, which turned out to be quite a quick read.
Although it initially felt like we were introduced to too many characters at once, you do eventually get used to it and know who's who. However, none of the characters were likeable which made me not root for anyone. The stakes aren't very high when you don't care about what happens to the characters.
I also felt that the plot was under-developed and could have done with more details. The story is very fast-paced and rather predictable. The supernatural element was interesting but I wasn't fond of it. I did enjoy the little twist at the end though.
Pretty much a juvenile and amateur version of Battle Royale and with flat characters.
