Over the Influence by Joanna "JoJo" Levesque
5.0

I normally don’t star-rate memoirs because it feels massively self-important to judge someone’s delivery of their own life story, but this memoir was so exceptional that I feel it’d be a disservice not to.

I’ve listened to Jo, and deeply admired her, for 14 years. Her music embedded itself into my heart at a young age & I’ve kept up with her career for as long as I’ve known of her. I look up to her as an almost Big Sister figure, and have since I was 11 years old.

All of that said, this memoir is a masterclass in reflection of one’s own journey, emotional growth, sitting with one’s emotions & decisions, and choosing vulnerability even when it feels like the worst option. I’m profoundly thankful that Joanna not only wrote this book, but allowed us to receive it, to listen to the advice & perspectives that she went through hell to learn.

This book was the longest audiobook I’ve listened to thus far (still learning what my brain can handle re: audiobooks) & it was an absolute gift. Jo’s delivery waxed and waned with the mood of the chapter. At times painful and shaky; at others, bombastic and bouncy. Mostly it felt like hanging out with an old friend, listening to her recount her innermost musings, and holding space for her to express herself however she needs to.

It is so generous of Jo to share her life in this capacity. I truly cannot understate how beautiful this was to listen to. Thank you, Jo.
