Mostly it just took me too long to read this book—I never quite got enough momentum and lost the thread too often. There were parts that felt fascinating, and parts that just felt too oblique for me. Libertie is never quite sure who she is supposed to be, or what she wants, or who she aligns herself with, but that means that as she’s holding everyone in her life at arm’s length (or, often, being held at arms length by them), we’re being kept at that distance, too. I think I just never fully got this…
