drtorte 's review for:
Lord Foul's Bane
by Stephen R. Donaldson
This is a hard read. This book in and of itself would be interesting but challenging, though the reason I wanted to listen through it is for the rest of them - and given that it's so far the series that I've found to be the most touching and impactful fantasy that I've read, it was well worth it.
HUGE trigger warning, however, and note that this is from the main character, someone we will follow for most of ten books.
Thomas Covenant himself is a depressed wreck of a man, and so, it is not easy to listen to him, or place ourselves in his head. There are plenty of cases where I just wanted to grab him by the shoulders and scream "DO SOMETHING", and yet, struggling with depression, it is totally understandable why he does not.
The characters, and especially the world, make it worthwhile though. Atiaren had an incredible impact on me, though she's only present in the first book. Foamfollower is one of my favourite characters of all time, now.
Lord Foul - as his name implies - is nothing but awful. A silly name, also, but given that he's, it makes sense.
