I'm afraid I had higher expectations for this book than I think it deserves. While I'll continue to keep an eye on this author, the prose and pacing of this book make it somewhat clear to me that this is a debut book -- but I enjoyed the characters and the subversion inherent to beginning the story with what might be the climax in a more traditional fantasy story.
