Dacia (day-sha) is a new college student who is looking for a fresh start. Her high school peers considered her weird because strange occurrences happened around her. Her best friend and protector, Cody, is also going to the same college and urges Dacia to make some new friends. It doesn’t take long for Dacia to make enemies and her strange powers become apparent to those around her. Can Dacia, Cody, and Dacia’s roommate, Sam, navigate these new college troubles?
Generally, I enjoyed this story. It was a solid YA and introduction to Dacia and her friends. I appreciated the portrayal of Dacia’s general anxiety and panic attacks surrounding her magic and dreams. I feel like any YA reader will be able to relate to Dacia in this way with anxieties of their own. The plot focuses a lot on calming Dacia from her anxiety and using the calm to think clearly and overcome her obstacles. I do feel like the lore behind Dacia’s powers and the villain, Nefarious, could have been built out a bit more (maybe it’s further along in the series). Some of the leaps of logic felt a little disjointed, but it may be something that a YA reader could gloss over. Cody’s speech patterns were a little hard for me to follow sometimes, but that could also just be the author trying to catch the dialect of that area (another me problem). Despite these very minor things for me, the plot and pace moved along quickly and held my attention the whole time. The villain was super creepy and evil, and it was a great intro to spooky season for me.
If you like YA action fantasy… check out this book!
