Ah, guys! Out of all the modern books I've read, and I can't think of any that are as classically written as this one. The writing style was simply beautiful. Not overwhelmingly wordy like some classics but elegant without being too flashy, ya know?
Being a short read, the story moved right along. I thought the pacing was great. Slow enough to offer details, descriptions and let us get to know the characters a bit but not too slow that it dragged. There was even a tiny little twist that I didn't see coming till I was right up on it.
The characters were sweet. The Langton family as a whole was as wholesome as it gets. My heart went out to Elenora, but I admire her for not giving up and keeping on. It's one thing to be overcome with pity but a different story when we let pity consume us. Jack was interesting and somewhat complex-ish.
When it came to Christian elements, this author didn't miss a beat. The Gospel was clearly explained.
If there's anything I didn't like, it's that the Langton siblings blended together and were hard to tell apart. There were like three or four main ones and the rest were background characters. Nothing wrong with that of course and the point is a very minor one.
Overall, this was a fantastic little Christmas read and I'm so glad I read it. If you're a fan of Christian fiction, Christmas miracles and the warm fuzzies of a touching ending, I highly recommend this! Since I can't decide between a 5 and a 4.5 rating, I'm going with my usual 4.8.
Special thanks to the author for making this a free download. :)
