An Ember in the Ashes by Sabaa Tahir

This book reminded me why I love YA fantasy. I simply could not put it down!

The world was written beautifully, interwoven with the plot rather than shoved right in our faces at the beginning. Laia's character development from the beginning to the end of the book was an absolute joy to witness. It's truly about the small steps.

The relationships in this one did feel underdeveloped and insta-lovey at times, especially Laia and Keenan. I just did not see a lot going on there. On the flip side, I wasn't convinced with Laia and Elias that much either.

I found Helene to be easily the most interesting and three dimensional character, I never truly felt like I knew what she would do next, and I have a feeling there is a lot in store for her character.

Elias was conflicting, and especially his relationship with Helene. There were moments where he was so firm on his feelings being purely platonic, but then there he was imagining kissing her. Giving very much boy. Slightly annoying.

Fast pace, kept me interested the whole way through, and the character/relationship flaws only make me want to read the rest of the books more to see how they will develop.
