Neon Gods by Katee Robert

4.0

I want to imprint the memory of this pleasure on her skin, to ensure that no matter where she goes or how much time passes, she'll always remember this. That she'll always remember me.

Neon Gods is a modernized retelling of Persephone and Hades.

Persephone is sunlight and warmth, the socialite darling of Olympus. Her mother has taken over the position of Demeter in the coveted Thirteen. Persephone wants nothing more than to get away from the demands of society, her mother, the corrupt politics of Olympus, and the Thirteen by fleeing Olympus. But on the verge of getting her wish on the coming of her 24th birthday, Persephone is thrust into an engagement with Zeus, dangerous and ruthless with the murder of multiple Hera's in his wake. Persephone flees her engagement and is chased to the Underworld where she falls onto Hades mercy. Hades, myth and rumored to have died years ago, strikes a bargain with Persephone to get back at Zeus for all that he has put him through. But will the undeniable chemistry between Persephone and Hades be their undoing?

I do appreciate the modern day take on the title of the gods as opposed to a singular immortal being. The chemistry between Persephone and Hades was the perfect combination of the "touch her and I will kill you" and "guarded heart but not for this one person" tropes. The way that Hades never made demands or pushed boundaries that weren't willing to be pushed was something I appreciate. I appreciate that he always made sure that Persephone consented. And while I LOVED those scenes that took place in the dark, I loved the tender moments most. The exploration and sharing of who Hades was and allowing Persephone to blossom into her own person, not who politics had demanded of her. However, I found myself wanting more and more of Hermes, though. The character was a joy and stole every scene she was in. I loved her loyalty, her boundary pushing, her banter. I would die for Hermes.
