Battle Royale
by Koushun Takami
This is a novel like a videogame and it's just as much fun. It's not exactly saying the most prescient things or doing anything new, but it's unbelievably fun to read, which is odd considering the content.
But, I mean, put a bunch of hormonal teenagers on an island, tell them to kill each other, and things just sort of write themselves, I guess.
It has a lot to say about society, both global and japanese, but, really, this is just a nonstop madcap violent masquerade and we're delighted just to have the doors open for us.
For a novel of this length, too, it goes extremely fast.
I loved it.
