The Oracle Glass by Judith Merkle Riley
5.0

In 1675, France is not only ruled by the illustrious King Louis XIV but also by his infamous mistress and the one they call the Shadow Queen. As a fortune teller it is she who knows all, sees all and can fulfill anyone’s greatest desires. She prides herself on her connections and her abilities to transform others for her own needs.
Her greatest accomplishment is non other than Madame de Morville. A woman who is thought to be over 150 years old and can reveal the future just by peering into a bowl of water. Sadly the only future Madame can’t foretell is her own. If she could than she’d never have agreed to the disguise, for beneath all the black clothes and white makeup is a young girl named Genevieve Pasquier. A young girl who had the misfortune of being born with a twisted spine and a deformed foot. All she wanted was to be accepted and beautiful but instead her gifts will give her so much more than she ever bargained for.
Based on the history of the real life Paris witches, I enjoyed this version told from the outside looking in. From the very beginning I was captivated as these women truly left their mark on a time in history when magic seemed very possible and Madame de Morville is honestly just a good person who got mixed up with the wrong crowd. Although the book is rather long it’s worth the 534 pages!
