This picks up right where the first book ends and is pretty much non-stop movement until the very end. Just like in the first book we only get Demi's perspective though as Demi and Sawyer are separated, it would've been great to get his perspective to see how the shit hit the fan back in Wolf City from the moment she was captured. Sadly, we only get minor snippets and 'recaps' from Sawyer and Demi's mental communication and it was a bit underwhelming.

The majority of this book follows Demi as she journeys back from Troll Valley through various territories (Troll Valley, Dark Fae, Light Fae, Wildlands) and I liked getting to see how different they are. Again, I think the world-building was done well and I had a clear picture in my head of the magical races and their lands as we journeyed through them. It was slower-paced as there are a lot of reflective moments over what took place and speculation about what's happened since then, and being in Demi's head was a bit repetitive. We do see her character gain some strength and self-assurance in this book though and we get to see her wield her powers more now that the secret is out, but she also happens to very quickly run into Walsh and Sage, who are on their way to rescue her, while in Dark Fae lands. I wasn't mad about it though because I liked Sage and her friendship with Demi, and it lessened the pining in her internal monologues.

That said, I was honestly disappointed and frankly annoyed by Demi's quick forgiveness of Sawyer's actions. Like, woman, please. Stick up for yourself? Where's your backbone? He did you real dirty and you're gonna capitulate that easily? I found it even more frustrating that though she said "she loves him and she'll get over what he did" she seems to rethink it all when they finally meet up and she goes through more hemming and hawing in her head and... Welp!
