The One by John Marrs

3.0

A representation of how my face looks like when the plot could not stop twisting.

Match Your DNA is guaranteed to find your true love with a single cheek swab! We follow five people and how this technology affected their lives. Ellie, the founder of the gene that would determine the person you are genetically made for; Christopher, a serial killer; Nick, whose fiancee is insisting they do the test to prove that they are meant to be together; Mandy, who fears that she was out of her Match's league; Jade, whose Match is across the world.

Rating: ★★★

I got to hand it to John Marrs. I loved the concept of having a DNA matching program. It would save us all the trouble as the book had predicted. If he would come up with another unique storyline, I would definitely eat it up. However, I think the weak point of this book is that while it has a lot of exciting moments, it somehow dragged.

Let me get this out of the way before I start. Here is my rating of the storylines:

1. Christopher (OBVIOUSLY)
2. Nick
3. Ellie
4. Mandy
5. Jade

The things that I like

The concept. I mean THIS WOULD BE REVOLUTIONARY. I love how it was also talked about in the book how Match Your DNA affect the world including economics, businesses, divorce, marriages, and the like. I can imagine the world like that to be honest. And if this would ever happen, I think I would definitely take the test.

Short chapters. Each chapter has a way of gripping you. You won't probably spend more than 10 minutes in a chapter. Hell, not even 5 if you read fast. I love how it always ended in a cliffhanger and I was always at the edge of my seat.

The plot twists?! Girl, there is A LOT. It's like driving on a road that you think would only lead straight but it suddenly turns and twists and ends. It's nuts.

Christopher's Storyline. You know what? This is just chef's kisses from the start to the end. I loved the character development, the tension, the suspense, the love story. UGH! This could make a complete movie on its own. I think this is this book's highlight.

The mystery in Mandy's story. Alright, this is one of the creepiest ones. I thought that her story would be the most boring but when the mystery was revealed I WAS SHOCKED.

The mystery in Ellie's story. OH MY HEAVENS. I'M CALLING THE POLICE.

Nick's story. I honestly just adored it. It was so cute!!

The things that I DID NOT like

I think this book could have been explored more. If there's going to be an anthology for this, I would read it. It would be great! I would love to see how this technology affects other lives.

Jade's storyline. I was excited about this at first and could not wait for her to meet her Match, but it turned out to be not as great as what the author did for the other stories. Probably the reason why I didn't like this as much was it was the closest to reality. Lololol.

The stories dragged. It's exciting! But I think the stories could have been cut shorter. Around the middle I was skimming through some pages because I already know what was going to happen.

In sum: I recommend this for people who love plot twists and fast-paced stories. This was a 3 solid stars for me. A great read if you're in need of a palate cleanser and if you want something to binge.

There is also a Netflix show about this but I didn't watch it. I tried but I found out that it was not really the same storyline and characters from the book so I decided to skip it.
