A River Enchanted was one of my top reads last year so it comes as no surprise to me that the second half, A Fire Endless, will only solidify this duology as one of my favorites. The blending of action, adventure, mystery and romance, with the Celtic tones, warming settings, character depth, emphasis on music, magical elements and cozy vibes are just perfection.
I won’t say too much about the plot, because spoilers, but this one picks up exactly where The River Enchanted leaves off with seamless continuity, making the duology feel like two perfect cohesive halves of a whole.
This half also continues to expand the world building of the island of Cadence. While River takes place in the East with the Tamerlains, Fire gives us a new glimpse into the west and the lives of the Breccans.
I loved the introduction of the new characters and spirits of the isle while expanding upon those we are already familiar with and have grown to love. Following along as Adaira, Jack, Sidra, and Torin come to terms with their new roles after the events of River. Each character showing a duality of strength and passion with softness and vulnerability through the trials they must each face and the growth they endure as they come into their own. Every relationship is tested and deepened by the end.
The romance here is done tastefully and is beautifully heartfelt. Although not completely fade to black, like in River, it’s far from graphic and it’s less about the mechanics than the actual emotions involved.
Although the stakes aren’t entirely low and there is a sense of urgency in the pages that keeps you hooked, the magical vibes keep it feeling so cozy. Each twist, turn and revelation keeping me on my toes.
The ending was just an enchanting as the story, pure magic and beautifully tearful. Leaving me longing for more time on Cadence. This is a true tale of hope and healing, of coming together and looking past differences. It will wrap itself around your heart and won’t let go.
