To be frank, this is my first graphic novel provided to me by an editor I met at a book event for a fellow acquaintance. I honestly did not know what to expect as I'd read comic books as a child, never graphic novels. I see a clear difference now. I was immersed. It was a gripping read that I did not expect a graphic novel to categorize. Barney Guttman, has a potentially triggering, backstory and it is dark. Life can be tough, and through the Primary characters, it's evident that life isn't always easy. I would like to call it a call to survival in dark times.

Without spoilers, this was a shocking read and one I did not expect. It's dark, relateable, humorous, and also has a sense of compassion. It sounds oxymoronic, but you are left connecting with the characters and empathizing as if they are your best friends, or someone who we know who has gone through tragic moments as the MC.

You may be in for a shocking treat, deep and dark, but additionally funny. There is the undeniably strong - raw - human, relatable and emotional element to it, as well; it leaves you wanting to be a part of advocacy, but also feel a bit of rage.

The characters made the story. It was a buffet of all flavors and textures, it was hard to put down once I started. Bravo!

I am generally a novel person, but this was a wonderful break from my norm. Beautiful art work and I'd continue the story, for sure.

Thank you Union Square & Co for this graphic novel.
