The Autumnal: The Complete Series by Daniel Kraus

5.0

Probably a strong 3.5 or 4 but hey, a tree monster? That earns an extra star on its own.

The story itself is almost criminally generic, a small-town Americana riff on The Wicker Man, but this is buoyed by a handful of great reveals that are made all the more impactful by some magnificent and gruesome artwork. I came for Kraus but I stayed for Shehan.

That said, Kraus does some good character work here, and his knack for stinger endings really comes through not just at the end of this, but in how he wraps up most of the individual chapters as well, especially chapter one, where you really don't know what's going on just yet.

Also caught a handful of little cameos- Kraus himself shows up at one point as a random townie, and the spine of his Bent Heavens appears on a bookshelf as well. Someday I'll re-read this and hope to catch some more.
