A Gate at the Stairs by Lorrie Moore

3.0

I wanted to give this more like 2.5 stars. It's Lorrie Moore, so of course there are some lovely turns of phrase, lots of her particular kind of humor, and some amazing descriptions. However, the plot (and the lack thereof) was incredibly frustrating. I'm not the plot police, I have loved many a meandering, plot-free novel. What is frustrating about this one is that about one third of the way through it appears to be going somewhere, and somewhere intriguing at that, but then it goes nowhere and we are back to the aimless meandering for a big chunk at the end. Also, there are more than a few really unbelievable plot points that I found jarring. I was pretty disappointed.
