Because I Could Not Stop for Death by Amanda Flower

3.0

Thanks to PRH for letting me read an advance reader's copy of this original historical mystery. Emily Dickinson's maid Willa is the heroine and narrator but the Belle of Amherst herself is, surprisingly, the principal detective. Willa's brother has been murdered in connection with the Underground Railroad in town. The author leans heavily on Emily's famously eccentric, contrarian, "strong-minded" reputation in explaining why she decides to investigate the murder. The problem for me was that the murderer was too easy to guess. Still, it was an enjoyable romp and I liked the way the author wove in some of Emily's poetry.
