Pretty astonishing that DFW was my age when he cooked this up. All that being said, its status as a debut is pretty glaring. Compared to his later novels, you can feel the same moving parts here in Broom, but with understandably less polish and smoothness.
At this power level of metafiction, I feel like I would have extracted more had I had a better background in his lane of philosophy. I’m content not having that. All that being said, this still demonstrates the quirkiness of his characters excellently, with a nicely convoluted and mysterious plot to shuffle them along with.
