The Boston Girl
by Anita Diamant
This book was warmly recommended to me by my best friend, and did not disappoint! The writing is wonderful, the characters interesting and it just... pulled me in entirely. I got immersed in the time period, full of wonderful small firsts of women empowerment and the many, many hardships of the time period. So many hardships. As a minority, as a woman.. as an unmarried woman, struggling for any independence hard-earned. There were so many small moments that made me tear up, and just be overcome thinking about how difficult it was back then - how a simple flu turned into a deadly plague, for which there was no cure; or how common children working in factories instead of studying was.
A lot of hardship was shown, but somehow the overall tone of the book was one of strength and progress and the amazing power of women, of female friendships, and of helping to lift each other up. I loved seeing this feminist message all throughout the book - all these different women characters, and how they dealt with the hardships, the setbacks - and how they helped each other forward. Honestly, that kind of female support system and friendship is what I wish for myself, and every other woman.
Also: there was a short but unbelievably lovely love story at the very end of the book, which still managed to melt me completely. I love a good falling in love story, what can I say.
Conclusion - I'd gladly recommend this to anyone looking for an empowering story of women, a coming-of-age novel, and well done historical fiction.
