My general takeaway is that Laura Schroff was trying to do a good thing and make a difference in Maurice's life. She didn't try to fix everything but offered him friendship, support and provided basic necessities. For Maurice's part, he gained a role model and supportive parental figure that showed him he did/does have a choice in the kind of life he wants to live. It is not without challenges, but it is not entirely predetermined. The story/events are interesting but I didn't find the writing that engaging or convey as much emotion as I would expect given the details of both her own childhood and Maurice's experiences.
