Girl in Translation by Jean Kwok
4.0

Very enjoyable story of a Chinese immigrant's experience of mother and daughter. I loved following the journey of Kimberly's hardship with her horrible auntie, un-safe living situations and trying school professors, but finding a path through it all with small lights of friendship, motherly love and education.

I really enjoyed Kwok's integration of Chinese sayings in english during the book, as well as the exposure to cultural expectations or traditions. Only challenging aspect for me was her relationship with Matt playing out so poorly in the end when there was clearly so much love. It felt as if she never really gave him to chance to integrate into her life and I did not support her choice to keep the baby, but never tell him so the child will never know his father.
