A Conjuring of Light by V.E. Schwab

5.0

IMO this series has achieved what every trilogy (book, movie, or otherwise) attempts:

The FIRST book sets up the works without taking too much time and it’s a great standalone if you decide not to read on.
The SECOND book is a slower burn because the main action is meant to share more about the world while something darker grows in the background.
The THIRD book couldn’t be a trilogy on its own because it’s obviously the main attraction, but it don’t feel drug out or rushed - plus, since there was so much time to understand the world in the prior books there’s no time wasted on reexplaining every little thing.

This series reminded me why I love fantasy even though I don’t fall in love with every series I find. I love the world and characters within the story. The last time I was so excited about a series was probably the Grisha trilogy by Leigh Bardugo - BUT the romance within it was too YA (I know the book is YA, but I feel like there’s a difference) and would really lose me with all the babbling on about interests. This series has limited romance and it all feels way more realistic in this world full of fighting and magic and other more urgent matters than “which guy should I choose to love.”

PS I just learned that they are working on a movie adaptation of the first book in the series and I’m SO READY for that.
