Yet another part of U.S. history that is woefully, yet unsurprisingly, underrepresented in white-washed textbooks and history courses. Kyle Baker has created an excellent introduction to learning about Nat Turner and his "slave rebellion," because this graphic novel encourages further reading (it literally does: the final lines include "The rest of Nat Turner's actual confession is continued online at: http://www.wfu.edu/~zulick/340/natturner.html "). The faces in the drawings are so detailed and emotional. The inclusion of photography and the text of Nat Turner's confession throughout the graphic novel add depth and clarity. The storytelling is superb, with content about enslavement creating a frame around the rebellion itself, allowing for a more complicated and nuanced conversation about resistance instead of cold-blooded murder.
