While undeniably beautifully-written with great attention to detail, I cannot give this book any higher a score because of how empty and miserable it made me feel. It’s one of those books where you keep hoping against hope that something positive, a silver lining, will appear and yet it doesn’t (at least not in any meaningful way). The ending was disappointing and though I raced through it and it hit me emotionally, I wish it hadn’t been so full of misery. Maybe that’s the point of it all and I just didn’t quite get it but, still, I felt it unsatisfying for such a strong beginning.
