by Seanan McGuire
3.5! Rounded up because of McGuire's beautiful world as usual. (edited apr 26 to 3 stars) As I had vented to multiple people, her characters are amazing but not when you realize she tries to have a quirky fashion girl (mean goth or violent cutie) which really gets on my nerves. But Sloane was a lot more complex than some of McGuire's other attempts at quirky and the way the story unfolded with each chapter really caught my attention. She even played with a non-linear timeline at some points, flipped between different POVs and it all worked. That part (unlike the fashiony girls or her name patterns as i must stress) was never overdone. And sister/rival feels with Sloane and Henrietta? That slayed me.
Maybe I won't read McGuire's other stuff until I know for sure she's stopped trying so hard dressing her characters up but for the most part this is on par with solid, diverse characters and a world I want to play in. I wanted to round down but it was an author-specific annoyance and I didn't want to slight the book for what wouldn't have bothered me if I hadn't already read her other books.
