The Accidental Tourist
by Anne Tyler
This was really up and down for me. I loved it at first. I adored Macon and the Learys. I was rooting for Macon and Sarah to work it out. The writing impressive, flowing from humor to tragedy and creating realistic characters who could have easily been turned to charictures in a lesser writer's hands. But Muriel. Oh Muriel is awful. She is joining my list of characters I would most like to punch in the face. She's a horrible person and Macon is far far too good for her. And I think you're supposed to like her? So that left me really confused about how I feel about the book. It was also pretty sexist. The assumptions about gender roles felt like this was written in 1955 instead of 1985. There was also an awful comment about people who don't have children. However it was interesting to read a book that didn't go the way I wanted. Happy endings aren't a given.
I did find it funny that Macon writes travel books for business travelers and I bought this while on a business trip to NYC. I did not follow his advice though and did quite a lot of sightseeing - and took my spouse.
