Cassandra in Reverse by Holly Smale
4.0

Cassandra in Reverse is a story with a pretty cool concept. A neurodivergent woman whose life starts to fall apart and then discovers she can time travel and has the chance to do things differently as much as she wants. In the beginning, I was afraid the whole thing would end up feeling redundant over the “I’m travelling in time to save my four month old relationship with a man” – and let’s be honest, very few men are worth physically travelling for, let alone travel in time, am I right? Anyway, I got pretty intrigued with the mysterious woman who kept showing up everywhere and I just needed to see what would happen. I loved Cassandra, to be honest. It was obvious as a reader that she is an autistic character, but in real life, it’s so common for adult women to get a late autism diagnosis, so points for how factual it ended up being, I guess. The obsession with Greek mythology made everything better – got to say it’s also an hyper fixation for me since I was a kid, so that was cool. I also liked how fluid the writing was, the pace was just right for my brain, so I will probably check out some other stuff from the author. The ending felt right, but I have to say it wasn’t my favourite, but oh well, that’s life.

“What the fuck is wrong with me? Honestly, I thought I’d know what I was doing with my life by my thirties, but I don’t have a single clue. I don’t know what I want. I don’t know what I don’t want. I don’t know what’s supposed to make me happy. In the meantime, the rest of the world seems to be getting on with it. I look online and everyone I’ve ever met is having babies and getting engaged and getting promoted and buying a new kitchen. It feels like everyone I know is moving forward.”
