I loved all of the world building and seeing beyond “The Continent” in this book. The differences in politics, cultures, and landscape kept me enthralled.
The weakest point in this series is the romantic relationship between the protagonist and her shadowy boyfriend. They’re giving off major “First Love” energy and perhaps I’m an old curmudgeon but it doesn’t make sense. At one point in the book they even point out that humans don’t “mate” like dragons do, and yet these two are incapable of doing anything logical when the other is in jeopardy. I know they’re young but it really takes me out.
Also leaving the identity of the new dark wielder a secret was a huge cop-out. There was already a juicy cliffhanger at the end, why keep that tiny detail unanswered? It’s annoying.
