So Sad Today: Personal Essays by Melissa Broder

3.0

wavering between it’s cool that she’s so good at writing grotesque vulnerability, and it’s not so cool bc the essays are vulgar and gratuitous and self-absorbed and the parts that actually spoke to me made me so sad. I guess that’s probably on me ? I hate being reminded that we are just disgusting bodies using each other and constantly lying to one another to spare each other’s feelings and egos and the essay “help me not be a human being” was that on a page. the vomit fetish essay was an exercise in, uh, radical empathy / intense over sharing ? there’s a lot of self hatred here. this is the age of Twitter confessional essays and I’m not sure I’m getting everything out of it. the penultimate essay was really great though.

also, while I didn’t follow the @sosadtoday account, I was a big fan of her book Milk Fed, but fuck, because I really liked milk fed, this book makes me feel like the calorie counting, self hating, size fetishizing protagonist in milk fed is 100% a self insert which is .. questionable. I guess write what you know but it diminishes it somewhat.. what do you guys think ?
