Wynd Book One: Flight of the Prince by James Tynion IV

5.0

5/5 stars

I picked this up on a whim after reading some other comics form BOOM! Studios, and really loved it! It's very queer, has charming art, and has a strong undercurrent of hope and kindness and trying to make things better and do things for the people that you care about, even while it doesn't pull its punches about the sacrifices that are made along the way. It follows the story of Wynd, a magic-touched boy in a society where magic is hated and feared. The King who upholds the Blood Laws to try to eliminate all of the 'weird blood' is dying, and trying to force his son, Prince Yorik, to continue in his stead. Wynd, Yorik, the palace gardener's son, and Wynd's adoptive sister flee to join up with the Duke's rebellion, learning a lot along the way about how they've been lied to about the reality of magic, and figuring out how to do things like "how to be a person" and "how to be yourself."
