Dear Edward by Ann Napolitano

Dear Edward

Edward is a 'miracle boy' who survives a plane crash which kills 191 other people, including his family he is travelling with. This is a story of the aftermath with flashbacks to the plane journey whereupon you will meet the other occupants of the plane and hear their stories.

What did I like?

Well, firstly, this is NOT a book I would have usually read or is something 'up my street'. However, I have a real appreciation for Ann Napolitano's writing and the way she makes this feel very real. My favourite character by far was Shay, Edwards new found friend. The characters throughout are interesting and I wish they had been explored more thoroughly. I feel this could have been made into a 'character chapter' book instead of the flashbacks. However, they were some of the better parts of the story. The last few chapters, particularly describing the moments before the crash were the most interesting part of the book and did have me turning the pages rapidly in comparison to the rest of the book.

What did I not like?

Well, I did first think that this was a bit 'far-fetched' and felt it was hard to believe - however I have since been informed that this was based on a true story!! Which makes my whole viewpoint VERY different. Although, I did feel this was quite a depressing read, which is something I tend to avoid when choosing a book. I felt quite disconnected from Edward and found myself more interested in the Aunt and Uncle - which I would have liked to have known more about their feelings. I just feel like the author may have missed something by not exploring the other characters more and by focusing so much on Edward.

Finally...

All in all, I would recommend this to someone who likes 'real-life fiction' or a good sad story. Not my cup of tea but I can completely appreciate the way the Author captivates the aftermath of the event so well, without ever experiencing that themselves.
