woof. this was a rough one. i never thought i’d be saying that about a TJR book, but strange things happen every day. for a debut novel, it has chops. it’s heart wrenching, its human, its a lot of what i love about her books. but man was it a struggle to get through. the writing is SO choppy. in the points of the book where elsie is in the throes of her grief, i get it being a stylistic choice. but in the moments where she is having the time of her life with ben, the flow that comes with romance is entirely nonexistent. it feels like all the sentences have been cut off right before they’re about to get really good. i’m very glad to see that her writing has improved drastically since her first book!
