Invisible Monsters
by Chuck Palahniuk
I’ve concluded that Chuck Palahniuk is probably just not a writer for me. It’s not because of the content. He doesn’t offend me and I’m not horrified by what I read but when I read and listen to more and more of his works I feel like I’m reading the writings of an edgy young adult or teenager. Paragraphs make me cringe, roll my eyes, and groan in utter torment. Nothing wrong with people who love his work but it’s just not for me.
I did sort of enjoy the book. I thought the story was good, I thought the characters were interesting but I couldn’t bring myself to become invested. I couldn’t bring myself to say I love or even liked the book because I couldn’t get over the writing. It’s almost as if in my head I’m like, “if only someone else had written this”.
I feel conflicted. While his stuff definitely isn’t for me, I believe others would definitely enjoy this book as well as his other books, of course.
