The author has some amazing writing chops but dear gods is this book almost impossibly slow. And I think about 120 pages too long.

I think it’s more this a HUGE character focused story with very little overall plot. You’re mostly there to read about this eventual hero and his every day life. Which for my ADHD brain is like being forced to sit through an eternity of match lectures.

My biggest issue is that Denna and Kvothe are the biggest “special specials” I’ve read in a long time and it’s so dull. That being said, I chalk Kvothe’s arrogance and completely unrealistic genius to being a bard. Because that is what he is, and I actually kinda liked that. But Denna had no excuse to be so boring for being the main love interest.

Buttttt there are a handful of really great, really immersive scenes. So it’s probably more down to writing style preferences than story.
