Sunrise on the Reaping by Suzanne Collins

3.0

A bit disappointed in what we got in this book.

I had hoped that it would have matured with the audience of the original trilogy, but this felt pretty childish except at the very end. I think it would have been more interesting to get a new perspective on the arena, or maybe more of Haymitchs life after the games, but instead it was a pretty standard "the good guys versus the evil careerists and the regime". The plotline of
trying to destroy the arena
didn't really give much to the story either, instead it mostly took Haymitch away from the action. Maybe a way to skip out on writing a lot of action scenes? The fact that known characters keep popping up felt forced and made the world feel pretty small.

There are quite a few annoyances, but what's here is still serviceable, though a bit derivative of the original trilogy. I did find that the ending resonated a bit with me, though it does revel a bit too much in the misery perhaps.
