The Bloody Chamber and Other Stories
by Angela Carter
What a weird, WEIRD collection of fairy tale retellings!
The Bloody Chamber (a retelling of Bluebeard) itself is the best of the bunch, easily the one I enjoyed the most and would recommend reading. My least favorite was Puss-in-Boots, which is a weird blend of Puss-in-Boots and Barber of Seville—I was never a fan of Puss-in-Boots to begin with, and this version was not a good type of weird. The rest of the stories were enjoyable, but outside of Angela Carter's writing style nothing really blew me away. I do question the choice of having multiple retellings of the same fairy tales: there are two versions of Beauty and the Beast back to back, and also two Little Red Riding Hood retellings back to back. Did I mention this was weird??
