Vampires of El Norte by Isabel Cañas

2.5

I’m chalking this up to bad marketing,
This is primarily a romance, with a western war story setting, and a very small vampire subplot.. I’m not a romance reader so this was not for me

I was incredibly frustrated with the constant arguing (mostly centred around her being mad he left her as a child- even when she acknowledged he had a very good reason to). Then how they pine after each other despite knowing her father will never approve of them being together because she needs to marry someone wealthy… that’s the main focus of the story.

I don’t like the miscommunication trope and the idea of a woman being sold off for an alliance is less appealing. All he wants is for her to stand up to her father and she won’t.

A larger subplot, is her wanting to prove to her father she is useful as something more than some to be sold off in exchange for powerful connections. So she rides off into the war to protect their land acting as a healer.
and then after the first battle immediately leaves because she needs to protect her family from approaching vampires

The smaller subplot is in addition to enemies their are vampires attacking them too.

While I didn’t dislike the two main characters their internal monologues were not to my liking

Note: I wasn't going to read this story because the synopsis didn't sound like my vibe, but it was a nominee in the goodreads choice awards so I sort of had to haha
