Hateship, Friendship, Courtship, Loveship, Marriage: Stories by Alice Munro

5.0

All of the stories are centered around romantic and intimate relationships. Munro is marvelous at expressing the inner lives of her characters. The characters are layered, choosing what to reveal and what to conceal. They are recognizably human, conflicted and compromised. All of the relationships have troubles but none of them are monstrous; all of them develop in a plausible and recognizable manner. It feels like the characters have shared parts of themselves that they never would dare share with anyone. Fascinating and moving.
