This is a lyrical and poignant tale of a gorilla-Ivan, a baby elephant-Ruby, and some of their other animal companions (STELLA!!!) who are on display at a run-down mall. It's a less than ideal environment. The animals are isolated and live in cramped cages. Following a major change, Ivan puts a plan in action to honor a promise and to protect his family.
The story is told from Ivan's perspective, so we get funny, astute, and often heartbreaking observations about humans, his life before, and his current situation. Have tissues at the ready.
