Getting Schooled by Emma Chase

Well, Emma Chase sure outdid herself with this one.
It had everything. At first, it plays out like a fun second-chance romance: lots of witty dialogues and narrations (gosh do I love her writing style and wits), heroes you connect with and love, and the angst isn’t big, so it’s feel-good all around. Not exactly a page-turner as in you can’t wait to know what happens next and the suspense is killing you, but it keeps you entertained so much you want to keep on reading nonetheless, because you know you’re gonna have a good time. It’s a different kind of page-turner: you can leave the book and be fine, but once you’re in it, you don’t want the good times to end.
Besides, the book had lots of sub-plots and sub-characters, and I LOVE that. It brings you into a whole world rather than stay focused on a narrow window opening on the romance only. The romance was pretty low on angst and yet, there were deeper subjects and emotions involved through other sub-plots:
SpoilerDavid and Snoopy were really good ones, and the miscarriage too (this last one was played well I think, not overdone at all but present enough to mean something)
. It’s these subtle touches I love when reading a romance. All the kids were a real treat, and the hindsight views of Garrett and Callie about kids and life in general was so great.
And God, about the ending:
Spoilercan I say I love it when you’ve got 3 epilogues? It’s GENIUS. It makes you so damn happy to turn what you expect is the last page, only it's actually another epilogue you get. Figured there were two when I saw “Epilogue 1”, but I was so glad to get a third one. It’s so satisfying, and it doesn’t leave you hanging.

So it was a bit different from Emma Chase’s other works, but it reminded me of my all-time favourite from her, Sustained (and its short sequel Sidebarred). Getting Schooled wasn’t only an awesome romcom with LOL moments, it had depth and heart coming from all around the heroes, and that, to me, is gold.
